GPK, UAE contracted Albwardy Damen to pull out all the three legs of their lift-boat, Kingfish and renew the damaged racks.

Scope: To pull out all the three legs and renew the damaged racks
Timing: Jan 2018 – April 2018 (25/01/2018 –29/04/2018)
Class: BV
Major highlights: Completed within and as per the contract to full satisfaction of owner and DNV-GL, without being even a single first aid case reported.

GPK, UAE contracted Albwardy Damen to pull out all the three legs of their lift-boat, Kingfish and renew the damaged racks.

Work carried out:
Pulling out the legs and rack renewal

  • Lift out all the three legs (135 tons approx. each leg) using 600ton crawler crane

  • Erect staging on either sides of all the legs

  • Degrease and hydro-blast the legs

  • Carryout survey and prepare reports on the condition of the racks

  • Finalize the damaged racks that needs to be renewed with the owners and class (more than 200m of racks renewed)

  • Crop out, prepare the surface, fit-up the new racks, match the timings with the existing racks, pre-heating, welding, post weld heat treatment and NDT

  • Calibrate the legs and leg towers and finalize the size of the shims in the towers and renew accordingly

  • Lift back the legs and insert through the tower and weld to the pads and NDT

Other repairs
Kingfish sustained a grounding before arriving the shipyard resulting major damage to the skeg, rudder, propeller and A-frame and tail shaft. Following repairs were carried out.

  • Tail shafts were pressed with hydraulic jacks on the lathe machine to bring back the straightness to the allowable limits

  • A-frames were cropped together with the skeg, realigned, line bored the A-frame and new buses were fitted. Skeg was completely renewed

  • Propellers were repaired, pitch corrected and balanced

  • Damaged portion of the rudder blades were renewed

  • Single lengthy rudder stock was redesigned to flanged type and modified accordingly

  • All the above works were done in line with class approved procedures
